A quick guide on how to conquer your first mountain.

Choose a trail that is “just right”

Do not overdo it. Pick a trail that is not too flat, and not too hilly-- just the right amount of ease and challenge for a beginner. Know whether a trail requires you to climb for the most part of the hike and reserve that instead for your future adventures.

Pack the essentials

Wear the right clothes. Invest in workout clothes that are light enough to keep you cool, but also long enough to protect your arms and legs from the elements. As for things to bring, pack only the essentials to keep your backpack from getting too bulky.

Review the trail

This step is very important. Make sure you familiarize yourself with the path, and take note of the weather before embarking on your journey. Tip: keep your map inside a ziplock so as to keep it intact for the rest of the trip.

Inform others and invite them

Remember to tell someone where exactly you will go, what you will be wearing, and when you will hike. It’s better to be safe and you can even invite your travel buddies to your hiking trip to make it more fun and memorable!

Walk at a moderate pace

Hiking is not a race and you can go on what pace you are comfortable with. Do not pour out your energies in one go and just enjoy nature every step of the way instead. If you are with a group, just stay together and keep up with each other.
